Halloween is a favourite holiday for many children. But after the fun of trick or treating is over, how do we approach all the leftover sweets? Involving children in managing their Halloween treats can actually be a great learning opportunity for them to regulate their own eating and support a healthy relationship with food. With the nice sunny fall we had so far, the garden lessons at Mamquam Edible Schoolyard have been really enjoyable. Harvesting produce has been a weekly activity with the children as well as tasting the fruit of their labour.
We have been putting a focus on what to do with that abundance of produce by exploring the different methods of food preservation. We have processed some of our harvest in two different recipes : Pickled cabbage and Chocolate zucchini muffins.

Now that the garden is empty we have been working at cleaning up the planting beds and repurposing our green waste into some Halloween decorations.

Whether you’re headed to school, or just trying to get where you’re going:

• Pay attention. Set aside distractions, and please respect and follow the laws. Distracted driving and impatient actions put our students at risk.

Robotics Club was very busy this week. Students in the primary grades had their first lab with the Code & Go robot mice. They created a path for the mice to travel to get to the cheese and then coded their mouse to travel along the path. The learned about debugging and logical reasoning. The intermediate students created Halloween robots and had a parade to show off their costumes. They also took their Ozobot trick-or-treating by coding a path through a community of houses. Who knew coding was so fun!

We are looking for lanyards to be donated to the school for nametags to be worn in Garden classes. Please check around your home for old lanyards from the Gondola or ski passes or anywhere else!

The preliminary election results have been released, please check out the elected Board of Education for School District No. 48 for the next four-year term (2022-2026).

Picture Day is on Monday October 17th. Please dress accordingly and try not to wear green.
